BRN Projects

The BRN Project Program provides qualified trainees with bioinformatics research projects.

Trainees gain the opportunity for real-world research experience and one-on-one bioinformatics mentorship.

Project providers gain assistance with their research and the opportunity to mentor talented trainees from around the world. BRN manages and organizes the trainee team, so you don't have to worry about logistics.

Check

Eligible projects are typically provided by graduate students, post-docs, or principal investigators in academic labs. Projects relate to an area of biological sciences and involve bioinformatics. Read more in our eligibility guide.

Propose

If you determine that you are eligible, propose your project using our project proposal form.
Once your project is approved, BRN will work with you to develop a project announcement. We will use this to recruit a project team.

Mentor

Once the project is underway, the project team lead will be your point of contact for data, results, and questions. You will also meet with the team regularly to provide mentorship and feedback.

Conclude

When you are ready to conclude the project, just let the project lead know and they will work with you to finalize the project. Resulting manuscripts and publications should appropriately acknowledge all contributors.

Select

Trainees should begin by browsing the list of open projects here. It is a good idea to select 1-2 projects that align with your interests and goals as projects may close before you qualify for them.

Qualify

Complete the skill assessments listed in the description for your selected projects and send them to Henry (on Slack) for certification. Once completed, Henry will connect you with the project lead for your top-choice project.

Volunteer

Join the project team and begin contributing under the mentorship and direction of the project lead. There will also typically be a regular project meeting which you are expected to attend virtually.

Conclude

You are free to continue contributing until the project ends -- however, you are expected to participate for the commitment time window specified in the project description (usually 3-6 months). If the project is published, you may have the opportunity for co-authorship, so keep your contact information up to date even after you finish.
